Receipts: After low weekends, domestic and international films bounce back
Domestic: Lilo & Stitch, released Friday, May 23, 2025, held its top spot at the U.S. box office with a weekend gross of $32.3 million. The film has already grossed $772.5 million worldwide, more than making back its $100 million budget, marking it a box office success.
The film is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated film of the same name. It follows lonely Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) and her older sister Nani (Sydney Elizabeth Agudong) as they encounter a mysterious blue alien, Stitch, who changes their lives. The film has garnered a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising its charm and the performances while still comparing it unfavorably to the original.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, released Friday, June 6, 2025, took the number two spot at the box office with an opening gross of $24.5 million. With a $90 million budget and a total gross of $50.5 million, the film is currently underperforming.
Ballerina (marketed as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina) follows Eve (Ana de Armas), a trained assassin who seeks revenge against those who killed her father. The film currently has a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising the action sequences and the film’s performances. The film is noteworthy as being the last on-screen performance of actor Lance Reddick, who portrayed Charon in the John Wick series and passed away in 2023.
Karate Kid: Legends, released Friday, May, 30, 2025, dropped from number three to four with a weekend gross of $8.56 million. With a total gross of $73.9 million and a budget of $45 million, the film is bombing financially at the box office while doing equally poorly with critics, boasting a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is a new entry in the Karate Kid franchise and also ties in elements from the popular Cobra Kai (2018-2025) TV series. The film follows Li (Ben Wang), a young boy skilled in kung fu who learns karate from Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) in order to beat his rival in a karate championship.
The newest Wes Anderson film, The Phoenecian Scheme, released Friday, May 30, 2025, rose from 14 to six at the box office with a weekend gross of $6.2 million. The film has grossed a total of $18.2 million against its $30 million budget, currently failing to recoup its budget despite critical praise with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Benicio del Toro as Anatole Korda, a business tycoon who, realizing his mortality, decides to leave his empire to his estranged daughter.
Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye, released Friday, June 6, 2025, opened at number eight at the box office with an opening gross of $3.1 million. Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye is the newest entry in the Dandadan anime series, originally released in 2024. The anime follows Momo and Okarun, two high school students who find themselves thrust into a world of ghosts and aliens.
The film is a cut of the first three episodes of the second season and currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sinners (2025) dropped from six to nine at the box office, taking in an additional $2.8 million. Led by Michael B. Jordan and written and directed by longtime-collaborator Ryan Coogler, the horror film received critical acclaim with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $357.2 million against its $90 million budget.
International: Hi-Five, released Friday, May 30, 2025, took the number two spot at the South Korean box office with a gross of $2.7 million and a total gross of $7.8 million. With a budget of $14.6 million, the film is currently bombing at the box office. Hi-Five also has a market share of 24.36%.

The film follows Ji-hee (Kim Gyu-ri) who seeks power by any means, even through dark rituals if it means she controls the country.
Big Deal, released Friday, May 30, 2025 took the number six spot with a gross of $253,703, a total gross of $1.7 million, and a market share of 2.25%. The film follows Pyo Jong-rok (Yoo Hae-jin), the CFO of Gukbo Group, a popular alcohol company going through financial turmoil during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. As Jong-rok becomes desperate, an ambitious global investment employee, Choi In-beom (Lee Je-hoon), seeks to take control of the company.
The Japanese short film Magic Candies (2024) took the number eight spot at the box office with a gross of $73,817, a total gross of $244,908, and a market share of 0.65%. The stop-motion animated film follows Dong-Dong, a lonely little boy who purchases candy that, to his surprise, makes his house come to life. The film has received critical acclaim and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, released Thursday, May 29, 2025, took the number nine spot at the Japanese box office with a gross of $62,014 and a total gross of $358,000, along with a market share of 0.55%. The film is an animated musical based on the mobile video game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! and follows teenage musician Ichika, who meets virtual singer Hatsune Miku and helps her forge a new path.
Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Graffiti Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes (2021) took the number ten spot with a gross of $40,391, a total gross of $1.4 million, and a market share of 0.35%. The film is the 28th entry in the Crayon Shin-chan manga and anime comedy series. It follows a magical crayon that is losing its powers due to the popularity of technology. The crayon powers a magical kingdom that begins kidnapping children to force them to color with crayons, thus ensuring their survival, with one of those children being the popular Japanese character, Shin-chan.
Streaming: The Wild Robot (2024) spent two weeks at number two in the Netflix Top 10, with 8.5 million views and 12.7 million hours watched. The film follows a robot, Roz (Lupita Nyong’o), who becomes an adoptive parent to an abandoned goose. The film received critical praise, with a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 at number five, with 5.1 million views and 8.6 million hours watched. Starring Antonio Banderas as the title character, Salma Hayek, and Harvey Guillén, the film follows Puss in Boots as he seeks a fabled magic star that he can use to restore eight of his nine lives.
