Receipts: Amidst A Low Weekend Of Returns, 'Lilo & Stitch' Comes Out On Top

Domestic: Lilo & Stitch, released Friday, May 23, 2025, opened at the top of the U.S. box office with a weekend gross of $145.5 million. The film has already grossed $341.7 million worldwide, more than doubling its $100 million budget, marking it a box office success.

The film is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated film of the same name. It follows lonely Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) and her older sister Nani (Sydney Elizabeth Agudong), as they encounter a mysterious blue alien, Stitch, who changes their lives. Despite the film’s success, it currently has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its charm but returning to the criticism many of Disney’s live-action remakes face: their failure to match the original film.

Sinners, released Friday, April 18, 2025, dropped to the number five spot at the box office, grossing $8.75 million over the weekend. Made on a budget of $90 million, the film has grossed a total of $339 million, making it a box office success for Michael B. Jordan, who plays two characters in the film, and his longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed the film.

Hurry Up Tomorrow, released Friday, May 16, 2025, dropped from number six at the box office to number 10, with a weekend gross of $740,000. The film, starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan, follows a fictionalized version of Tesfaye as he experiences a mental breakdown.

The film has continued to bomb at the box office with a budget of $15 million against its worldwide gross of $5.5 million. Hurry Up Tomorrow has been slammed by critics with a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, criticizing it as a pointless and self-indulgent vanity project for The Weeknd.

International: Yadang: The Snitch, released Wednesday, April 16, 2025, continued it’s descent from the top, moving from number two to three at the Korean box office with a weekend gross of $446,339 and a total gross of $22.8 million, with a 5.73% market share. The film follows Lee Kang-soo (Kang Ha-neul), who, after being falsely accused of a crime, becomes a “yadang” (an undercover informant) for the authorities. 

The Old Woman with the Knife, released Thursday, February 20, 2025, took the number five spot at the box office with a weekend gross of $140,939, a total gross of $3.69 million, and a market share of 1.81%.

The action film follows Hornclaw (Lee Hye-yong), an aging assassin who finds herself partnering with a young assassin with a mysterious connection to her. The film currently has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Election Fraud: God’s Will?, released Wednesday, May 21, 2025, took the number six spot at the box office with a weekend gross of $106,844 and a total gross of $150,922, with a market share of 1.37%. The documentary film promotes widely debunked theories of election fraud in South Korea’s 21st National Assembly election.

My Beloved Stranger, released Thursday, May 22, 2025, took the number seven spot at the box office, with a weekend gross of $80,167 and a total gross of $118,966, along with a market share of 1.02%. The film follows a married couple, Riku (Kento Nakajima) and Minami (Milet), who fell in love while in university. While Riku achieved his dream of being a writer, Minami failed to recognize her dream of being a singer, setting in motion a chain of events where Riku wakes up one morning to find their occupational goals have been suddenly changed.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, released Thursday, March 13, 2025, has continued its time in the top ten, with a weekend gross of $88,386, a total gross of $6.5 million, and a market share of 1.13%. The film is a recut of the last four episodes of Season 4 of Attack on Titan, a Japanese anime television series based on the manga of the same name.

Streaming: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) spent four weeks at number two in the Netflix top 10 with 8.7 million views and 14.8 million hours watched. Starring Antonio Banderas as the title character, Salma Hayek, and Harvey Guillén, the film follows Puss in Boots as he seeks a fabled magic star which he can use to restore eight of his nine lives. The film was released to critical acclaim, with a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Wild Robot (2024) spent one week at number 10 in the Netflix top 10, with 3.3 million views and 5.6 million hours watched. The film follows a robot, Roz (Lupita Nyong’o), who becomes an adoptive parent to an abandoned goose. The film received critical praise, with a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
