Receipts: Domestic Films Flop While International Films and Streaming Surge Forward

Domestic: Snow White, released Friday, March 21, 2025, experienced a significant drop at the box office from number four to number eight. The film grossed an additional $2.8 million, adding to its worldwide gross of $182.4 million. With a budget of around $240 million, the film has bombed at the box office and with critics, with a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Woman in the Yard, released Friday, March 28, 2025, also dropped significantly from five to nine, grossing $2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $21 million, and with a budget of $24 million, the film is a box office bomb.

Starring Danielle Deadwyler and Okwui Okpokwasili, the film follows a recently widowed mother who struggles to protect her family from a mysterious woman in black who appears in their yard. The film received negative reviews, with a 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This low return for films can be attributed to the blockbuster success of A Minecraft Movie, released Friday, April 4, 2025, that, despite negative reviews, has seen a surge in audience attendance, already making back its $150 million budget, currently grossing $552.7 million. The film went viral online through several re-edits of lines from the trailers, starting a trend where audiences attending film screenings to shout the lines back at the screen.

International: The Match, released Wednesday, March 26, 2025, took the number one spot at the South Korean box office with a gross of $2 million and a total gross of $11.8 million with a market share of 52.8%. The biopic stars Lee Byung-hun as Cho Hun-hyun, a famous South Korean Go player.

Lobby, released Wednesday, April 2, 2025, took the number three spot at the South Korean box office with a gross of $289,244 and a total gross of $1.6 million with a market share of 7.45%. The film stars Ha Jung-woo as Yoon Chang-wook, a start-up CEO who tries to win a project from the government.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, released Thursday, March 13, 2025, took the number four spot at the Japanese box office with a gross of $281,795 and a total gross of $4.9 million with a market share of 7.26%. The film is a recut of the last four episodes of Season 4 of Attack on Titan, a Japanese anime television series based on the manga of the same name.

Let Me Eat Your Pancreas (2017) took the number five spot at the Japanese box office with a gross of $89,604 and a total gross of $2.7 million with a market share of 2.31%. The film follows introvert Haruki Shiga (Takumi Kitamura), who meets Sakura Yamauchi (Minami Hamabe), a young girl with pancreatic cancer. 

Weekend in Taipei (2024) took the number eight spot at the French box office with a gross of $80,206 and a total gross of $81,315 with a market share of 2.06%. The film stars Luke Evans and Gwei Lun-mei as a former DEA agent and undercover operative, respectively. The two rekindle their romance during a weekend in Taipei and soon find themselves in the face of danger.

Streaming: One of Them Days, released Friday, January 17, 2025, took the number two spot on the Netflix top 10 after a week, with 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours watched. Starring Keke Palmer and SZA, the film follows two roommates trying to avoid eviction. The film has received critical acclaim, with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Con Mum, released Thursday, March 25, 2025, took the number eight spot on the Netflix top 10 after two weeks, with 4 million views and 5.9 million hours watched. The documentary follows Graham Hornigold, a chef who was scammed out of $300,000 by a woman claiming to be his mother.
