Receipts: 'Sinners' soars while international films dominate

Domestic: Sinners, released Friday, April 18, 2025, took the number three spot at the box office with a gross of $15.2 million. With a budget of $90 million, the film has currently grossed $317 million, setting it up as a box office success.

The film, written and directed by Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Elijah and Elias, who return to their home in the Deep South to open up a juke joint, only to find evil waiting for them. The film received critical acclaim for its themes, horror, action, drama, and comedic elements, with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hurry Up Tomorrow, released Friday, May 16, 2025, opened at number six at the box office with a gross of $3.3 million. The film, starring Abel Tesfaye (also known as The Weeknd), Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan, follows a fictionalized version of Tesfaye as he experiences a mental breakdown.

The film is currently bombing at the box office with a budget of $15 million against its worldwide gross of $3.5 million. Hurry Up Tomorrow has been slammed by critics who panned Tesfaye’s performance and the overall film, labeling it self-indulgent and a poor attempt at a vanity project.

International: Yadang: The Snitch, released Wednesday, April 16, 2025, dropped from the top spot to number two at the Korean box office with a gross of $816,647 and a total gross of $21.7 million with a 9.99% market share. The film follows Lee Kang-soo (Kang Ha-neul), who, after being falsely accused of a crime, becomes a “yadang” (an undercover informant) for the authorities. 

Since its release, the film has garnered critical acclaim and become the highest-grossing R-rated film in South Korea since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Old Woman with the Knife, released Thursday, February 20, 2025, took the number three spot at the box office with a gross of $338,282 and a total gross of $3.3 million and a market share of 4.13%.

The action film follows Hornclaw (Lee Hye-yong), an aging assassin who finds herself partnering with a young assassin with a mysterious connection to her. The film currently has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Holy Night: Demon Hunters, released Wednesday, April 30, 2025, took the seventh spot at the box office with a gross of $83,743 with a total gross of $5.1 million, and a market share of 1.02%. The film follows three demon hunters, Bau (Ma Dong-seok), Sharon (Seohyun), and Kim Gun (Lee David), who save Seoul when supernatural beings threaten it.

Happyend (2024) took the number eight spot at the box office with a gross of $70,824 and a total gross of $557,146 and a market share of .86%. The film follows two friends, Yuta (Hayato Kurihara) and Kou (Yukito Hidaka), who pull a prank and face devastating consequences before their high school graduation.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, released Thursday, March 13, 2025, took the number nine spot at the Japanese box office with a gross of $79,266 and a total gross of $6.3 million with a market share of .967%. The film is a recut of the last four episodes of Season 4 of Attack on Titan, a Japanese anime television series based on the manga of the same name.

Streaming: Inside Man: Most Wanted (2019) took the number two spot on the Netflix top ten with 12.3 million views and 21.8 million hours watched. The film follows hostage negotiator Remy Darbonne (Aml Ameen) as he forms a task force to prevent a robbery. The film is a sequel to Spike Lee’s 2006 film, Inside Man, and has a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Home (2015), starring Rihanna and Jim Parsons, took the number eight spot on Netflix's top ten with 3.9 million views and 6.1 million hours watched. The film follows a human girl, Tip (Rihanna), who befriends the alien Oh (Parsons) to help find her mother. The film has a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.
