'Sinners' takes the Lead In A Low Month For Films

Domestic: Sinners, released Friday, April 18, 2025, dominated the box office at number one with a gross of $45 million. The film’s budget is estimated to be around $90-100 million and has currently grossed $168.5 million worldwide, with just enough revenue to break even.

The film, written and directed by Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Elijah and Elias, who return to their home in the Deep South to open up a juke joint, only to find evil waiting for them. The film received critical acclaim for its themes, horror, action, drama, and comedic elements, with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

International: Yadang: The Snitch, released Wednesday, April 16, 2025, held the number one spot at the Korean box office with a gross of $3.5 million and a total gross of $10.8 million with a 49.56% market share. The film follows Lee Kang-soo (Kang Ha-neul), who, after being falsely accused of a crime, becomes “yadang” (an undercover informant) for the authorities. 

Since its release, the film has garnered critical acclaim and become the highest-grossing R-rated film in South Korea since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Match, released Wednesday, March 26, 2025, dropped to the number three spot at the South Korean box office with a gross of $371,972 and a total gross of $13.7 million with a market share of 5.24%. The biopic stars Lee Byung-hun as Cho Hun-hyun, a famous South Korean Go player.

Search and Seizure: The Rise of an Insurrection, released Friday, April 23, 2025, took the number four spot at the box office with a gross of $208,338 and a total gross of $279,651 with a market share of 2.93%. The documentary follows the 2023 raiding of a news outlet during its investigation into a defamation case against then-Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, released Thursday, March 13, 2025, took the number five spot at the Japanese box office with a gross of $175,828 and a total gross of $5.5 million with a market share of 2.47%. The film is a recut of the last four episodes of Season 4 of Attack on Titan, a Japanese anime television series based on the manga of the same name.

Streaming: Back in Action, a Netflix original film released Friday, January 17, 2025, held the number ten spot for seven weeks with 2.6 million views and 5 million hours watched. Starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, the film follows retired CIA agents who hide off the grid with their children before getting pulled back into a world of espionage. The film was critically panned with a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised Foxx and Diaz’s chemistry but criticized the weak script and direction.
