Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator, writer, and director of the hit Netflix series Squid Game, is set to receive the Creator Tribute at the second annual Gotham Television Awards.
The Creator Tribute was set up last year by The Gotham Film & Media Institute to recognize the writers and creators who have made the biggest impact on the television landscape. Hwang is set to receive this in recognition of his work on Squid Game, which he wrote and directed himself, based on an idea he had conceived over a decade prior.
A global sensation, the series became Netflix’s most-watched original series upon release, with 1.65 billion hours watched in its first 28 days, Squid Game was previously honored in 2021, after its first season won Best Long Form Breakthrough Series at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
The Gotham TV Awards, which held their inaugural ceremony in 2024, have been set up to recognize talent within television specifically. This year’s ceremony is set to take place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York on Monday, June 2, 2025, and will be streaming live on YouTube.
“Since Squid Game‘s breakout win at The Gotham Awards four years ago, its ascent has been nothing short of extraordinary—earning global acclaim, sweeping honors, and cementing its place as a landmark in modern television,” stated Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham. “With his genre-defying series, Director Hwang has reshaped the possibilities of episodic storytelling, captivating audiences worldwide with a series that is both thrilling and culturally defining. We are proud to recognize Squid Game and Director Hwang in this final chapter, in what promises to be an unforgettable moment at this year’s Gotham Television Awards.”
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the writers and executive producers of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Étoile, will also be receiving the Creator Tribute, alongside Hwang.
